A New Front Door for an 1887 Original: How Peter Luger Steak House Moved From Magento to Shopify

Peter Luger's website serves diners booking a table, fans buying gift certificates and merch, and regulars paying their house accounts. Zettler Digital moved it from Magento to Shopify with its full order history intact, launched in August 2024, and has kept extending it since.

About Peter Luger Steak House

Peter Luger Steak House has served USDA Prime, dry-aged beef at the foot of the Williamsburg Bridge in Brooklyn since 1887. The family-owned steakhouse is one of New York's best-known restaurants, with a second location in Great Neck, Long Island, and a following that reaches well past its dining rooms through gift certificates, merchandise and its signature steak sauce.

In 2024, Peter Luger hired Zettler Digital as its Shopify development partner to move peterluger.com off Magento and rebuild it around how guests actually use the site.

The Challenge

One Website, Several Very Different Jobs

Peter Luger's website had to do far more than a typical restaurant site, and the Magento build behind it had not kept pace.

Diners and Shoppers on One Site
Most visitors come to book a table, check a menu or order pickup. Others want a gift certificate, a hat or a tee. The site had to serve both without one getting in the way of the other.

A Restaurant With Its Own Payment Rules
Peter Luger doesn't accept credit cards in its dining rooms. Guests pay with the Peter Luger Card, checks, debit or cash, and regulars on house accounts settle invoices separately. The website had to explain and support all of it.

A Store to Move Without Losing History
Product listings and years of customer orders lived in Magento. All of it had to come across before the domain switched over.

New Photography Arriving Mid-Build
Peter Luger commissioned a new shoot with photographer Liz Clayman during the project, so the site had to be built to feature that work and take final assets close to launch.

The opportunity: a site the in-house team could run themselves, organized around reservations first and shopping second.

The Solution

A Shopify Build Organized Around How Guests Use Peter Luger

Zettler Digital built the new peterluger.com on a Shopify Online Store 2.0 theme, using the theme's own sections instead of custom code so the Peter Luger team can edit any page without a developer.

Magento to Shopify Migration
Zettler Digital imported the product catalog and migrated the full order history from Magento, then walked the team through the new Shopify admin before cutover.

Reservations-First Navigation
Core pages were remapped into Our Story, Locations, Butcher Shop, Gift Shop and Gallery, with Reservations, Menus, Pickup/Delivery and Gift Certificates kept in the top bar on every page.

Resy Booking for Each Location
Resy's Reserve Now button went live for Brooklyn at launch. When Peter Luger added Great Neck to Resy in January 2026, Zettler Digital added a matching button the same day.

Shopify for Gifting, Goldbelly for the Butcher Shop
Gift certificates and the gift shop sell through Shopify checkout. Meat packages, bacon and Luger Sauce link to Peter Luger's Goldbelly storefront, which handles perishable shipping.

House Accounts Portal
In December 2025, Zettler Digital embedded a customer payment portal built by Altiro Solutions, where house account clients log in, check balances and pay invoices.

The Brand Up Front
The homepage leads with the restaurant's 1887 founding story, a video hero, Liz Clayman's photography and press from The New York Times, Forbes, Eater and Bloomberg.

A Site That Grows With the Restaurant

Peter Luger's team runs peterluger.com day to day and brings in Zettler Digital when the restaurant adds something new: a location, a booking channel, a new way for regulars to pay. The partnership continues as one of New York's oldest steakhouses keeps its website as current as its dining room.
